Mr. Bowler was born in Kenya of missionary parents and grew up in Kenya and Uganda. He has worked in several countries in Africa over the last 25 years. Steve has a Masters Degree in Regional Planning with a focus on Community Development in developing countries. He has worked in a variety of positions that provided a broad range of expertise in all aspects
of project development and management. Much of Steve’s work has focused on children at risk and he has gained practical experience overseeing many projects focused on children. As Country Director for SOS Children’s Village of Malawi Trust for almost nine years, he pushed the development of programmes outside the traditional SOS Model and was instrumental in ensuring they were more community focused and based and benefited greater numbers of children.Steve then worked as the Africa Regional Coordinator for Visionledd – a Canadian based Christian organization that works to build the capacity of the “church” (all denominations) so they can respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic more effectively. Much of the work involved connecting, facilitating and networking all the various individuals and organizations working to improve the lives of those affected and infected by HIV and AIDS.
Steve has recently helped to establish the Fountain of Life Ltd and is a founding Director as well as the Country Director. FOL exists to ensure that there is effective assistance to victims of rape and/or sexual violence. It is registered as a Non-Profit Company limited by guarantee which allows the Directors to also be employed by the organization. This allows for greater control over all aspects of running FOL.
Steve has been involved on the Board of NOVOC (National Network of Organisations working with Orphans & Vulnerable Children) since it began in 2001 and has been Board Chair for the last 7 years. He also served on several other Boards in Malawi and the Region. These include Vice-Chair of the Regional Board of REPSSI (Regional Psycho-Social Support Initiative) for Namibia, Zambia and Malawi, Lifeline Malawi – providing medical care in rural areas, Chair of the Rape Crisis Task Force to establish an effective response to the issues of rape and sexual abuse and is now Country Director of Fountain of Life, Advisory board of MANERELA+ (Malawi Network of Religious Leaders Affected by AIDS), Kindle Orphan Outreach, Home of Hope and a Founding Director of Trust PSS.
Steve and his wife have two children – Amy and Alisa. Steve’s wife Kathy runs a successful project for children with disabilities – a model for Malawi.
